May 2026 (part 2)

We have once again returned, face dirtied and hair tousled, from the blurb mines, to offer up some thoughts on a few recent and not so recent tracks that I listened to and loved in May. Check out volume one of May writeups if you haven't done that already, otherwise we can get straight to it:

wishbone - “Spout”
An incredible heartwarmer, “Spout” opens with a total gut punch of a first line and doesn’t ease up from there. It’s a sincere, charming debut single from this Chicago-based crew.

ear - “Ne Plus Ultra”
Call me Vincent van Gogh because I’m excited for more ear!

Car Culture - “Doesn’t Really Matter (Physical Therapy Remix)”
A Physical Therapy remix of a Car Culture song is some real self-referential shit, considering they’re both monkers of the same guy, but you gotta hand it to him, this is a radical reinvention of the source material. The guest vocals from Squirrel Flower are clarified and centered in a way they weren’t before, making for a sunnier, more upbeat take on the hazy trip hop of the original track.

No Age - “Everybody’s Down”
Sometimes when I’m listening to No Age I’m convinced No Age is one of the best bands ever. “Everybody’s Down” is unquestionably one of the best songs ever. If you don’t get goosebumps when the drums finally come in, I don’t know what to tell you dude.

The Field - “Another Day”
Ambient techno loopmaster The Field is back after 8 years with an excellent new EP. I’m specifically loving “Another Day” but all five tracks are pretty uniformly great.

Bill Orcutt & Mabe Fratti - “A Rural Pen”
The final track from the new collaborative album from experimental guitar god Bill Orcutt and Guatemalan cellist Mabe Fratti is maybe my favorite of the bunch. A loping, super expressive bit of off-kilter Americana.

Spirit Level - “Divine Place”
Slow motion, homemade ambient jazz recorded in the English countryside, I’ve found myself returning to this Spirit Level record pretty frequently despite not being able to remember for the life of me where I first read about it. Sometimes stuff just shows up!

Way Dynamic - “Miffed It”
Look it’s okay to sound a lot like Nick Drake because it’s not like Nick Drake’s out there releasing new stuff or whatever. Anyways I gotta listen to Way Dynamic more! I’ve liked what I’ve heard a lot!
